Breaking Down Dropbox's 1.2M$ pitch deck.

Part 2

This is the part 2 of me breaking down Dropbox’s pitch deck, so If you haven’t checked do part one of it, do read it first.

In this post will continue slide 8 onwards.

Slide 8- Why Now

As I say, “Investors don’t invest in the company but in the opportunity.”
The ‘why now’ slide is one of the most essential slides in the deck.

These days AI Companies are being funded left and right, all because the VC and the investors want to capitalise on this opportunity to make money.

It’s better to pick market that’s small now and will grow massive with time than something that’s Big now but on the verge of dying soon.

With the ‘why now’ slide Dropbox proved that the opportunity is huge and will be growing even more, and here they do so via points that are easily observable by all rather than proving the points using numbers and graphically, though in my opinion using numbers and solid facts to prove your points are always better.

But as the overall theme in the dropbox’s slide is to be simple , direct and clear, it suits that well.

Slide 9 -Why Better

Note that, this slide is before the competitor analysis slide, and thus the biggest purpose of this slide is to put more emphasis on the features and the advantages of dropbox.

This aims at shifting the narrative from just how Dropbox beats its competitors more to why people will love using it!

Slide 10- Competitor Analysis

Instead of this table based representation, I feel like the competitor analysis 2×2matrix form as used in AirBnb’s pitch deck suits better. Both have different psychological effect, though, and are good depending on the situation.

You can choose any format you like for your startup.

Slide 11- USP

This is a risky slide to put according to Matt C Smith, a VC and a Youtuber. According to him you don’t want to make your competitors your enemies but friends. Rather than specifically pointing out why they suck, it’s better to focus on why yours is better and provide more value for the users.

Ideally Business is not about fighting with the competition but about mutual value creation for the society.

Slide 12- Some Geek Stuff.

Those who know, just know.

Slide 13-Epic Team

This is a very important slide, because to prove the competence of the founders is as if not more important than proving your business idea. Business can pivot, but more often than not the founding teams is a constant.

To establish your credibility, without overexaggerating or lying is a skill in itself. Just scroll through some good LinkedIn profiles headlines and you will learn exactly, how to sell yourself.

Don’t ignore this one, a very written team slide is a must must have!

Slide 14- Business Model

Though a not very elaborate business model, I would say, but still does the job. I feel that this should have contained more of numbers and a clearly specified timeline.

Slide 15-The Product

This slide is all about explaining how your product and it’s features, provides value to the users.

This reminds of of YC’s Tagline, “Make something people want”

Slide 16-CAC and traction

Though being a pre-seed company they have not much traction to show of but still it’s a good mention. I understand the limitation of not having much data to display, so instead they use a mix of advantages, traction and strategies.

Slide 17-Achievements

YC was not as big then as it is now, but regardless it’s an really impressive achievement to show.

After all those slides.

I don’t see no way, why someone wouldn’t want to invest in this company.

This is the amount of difference a good Pitch deck can make.

Watchout, don’t miss.

Peace. This is the part 2 of me breaking down Dropbox’s pitch deck, so If you haven’t checked do part one of it, do read it first.
